Marguerite Annie Johnson, popularly known as Maya Angelou, multi-talented poet, dancer, novelist, author, playwright, producer, and political activist, was born on this day in 1928 in St Louis.







 




Thaddeus Stevens, U.S. House of Representative from Pennsylvania, was born on this day in 1792. He was a fierce opponent of slavery and was dedicated to crushing slavery.












 



On this day in 1967, a year to the day he was murdered, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, made his opposition to the Vietnam War open in a speech titled “Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence”. It was also called the ‘Riverside Church’ speech.









In the afternoon on this day in Memphis Tennessee, the US lost its moral compass when a white sniper murdered Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, as he stood on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel. His death led to uprisings all over the country.




 







Senegal broke off from the federation with France for its independence on this day in 1960.
