Akwasi Osei

Human Rights campaigner El Hajj Malik El Shabazz, popularly known as Malcolm X, gave one of his best speeches on this day in 1964 titled “The Ballot or the Bullet”, in the throes of the 1964 elections season. His main point was to emphasize the possibility of the vote and for Black people to use it judiciously and work together.


 




Edward Regan Murphy, better known as Eddie Murphy, actor, comedian, writer, producer, and singer, was born on this day in 1961 in Brooklyn, New York.



 



On this day in 1950, Dr. Carter Godwin Woodson, historian, writer, and journalist, passed away in Washington, DC. He popularized the study of the African presence in the United States.









 

It was on this day in 1968 that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, gave his final speech at Mason Temple in Memphis, Tennessee. It is called the “Mountaintop Speech”.
