On this day in 1930, Her Royal Majesty Empress Zawditu of Ethiopia, Negiste Negest (Queen of Kings), passed away in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.







On the same day, the regent of Ethiopia (since 1916), Ras Tafari Makonnen, was proclaimed the next Emperor of Ethiopia. At his coronation, he became Emperor Haile Selassie the I, “Negusa Nagast”















John Robert Thompson, Jr, became the first Black Coach to win the NCAA Men’s Basketball Division I championship on this day in 1984 with the Georgetown University Hoyas.




Marvin Pentz Gaye, Jr., legendary singer, songwriter, record producer, and social commentator, was born on this day in 1939 in Washington, DC. He is credited with influencing the sound of Motown, and thus known as the Prince of Motown and the Prince of Soul.
