Samuel Lee Gravely was the first African American to reach the top as Vice Admiral in the United States Navy on this day in 1971


On this day in 1967, Muhammad Ali refused induction into the U S Army to fight in Vietnam. He was subsequently convicted and sentenced to prison. The Supreme Court eventually threw out the conviction.
