Coretta Scott, later to marry Martin Luther King, Jr, was born on this day in Marion, Alabama in 1927. She later became a civil rights leader in her own right. Her legacy is the Martin Luther King, Jr, Center Nonviolent Change based in Atlanta, Georgia.

Kwame Nkrumah, possibly the Greatest African leader, died of cancer Romania on this day in 1972. He was the President of Ghana, and the most ardent advocate of African Unity.


 











William Edward Burghardt DuBois published on this day in 1903 The Souls of Black Folks, a work that described Black life in all its forms, contradictions, and promise.
