Percy Lavon Julian, the award-winning chemist who has been called a genius, passed away on this day in 1975. He won over a hundred chemical patents.

On this day in 1837, Cheyney University began as the African Institute, and then later as Institute of Colored Youth. Cheyney is the oldest of all of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
