“Remember Fort Pillow”! This became the battle cry of Black soldiers after the Battle of Fort Pillow. In this battle, fought on this day in 1864, Union soldiers who were mostly Black people were massacred when they tried to surrender. The Confederate soldiers were under the command of General Nathan Bedford Forrest.



 




On this day in 1861 the Civil War was enjoined when the South Carolina Militia bombarded Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina. Events after this led to a full-scale war.



 

Herbert Jeffrey Hancock, composer, pianist, bandleader, and jazz great, who began his storied career with Donald Byrd, was born on this day in 1940 in Chicago, Illinois.



 

The Free African Society, a benevolent, mutual aid society designed to help members in time of need, was organized on this day in 1787 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Among its members were Richard Allen, Absalom Jones, Samuel Baston, Cato Freeman and James Forten,
