Akwasi Osei

At 10:22 am on this day in 1963, a Sunday morning, a bomb ripped through the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. Addie Mae Collins (14 years), Cynthia Wesley (14), Carole Robertson (14), and Carol Denise McNair (11) were killed. The bomb was placed by the KKK.



 




The great Paul Robeson, actor, political activist, lawyer, concert singer, human rights advocate, performed ‘Othello’ on stage for a then record 296th time at the Shubert Theater in New York City on this day in 1943.











 





On this day in 1964, Rev K.L. Buford and Dr. Stanley Smith were elected to the Tuskegee, Alabama City Council, becoming the first Black people to be elected in Alabama since Reconstruction in the 1860s. The margin of victory was provided by the Black Vote.




 


For the first time, on this day in 1978, Muhammad Ali earned the largest ever prizefight amount of 5 million dollars.
