Colin Kaepernick first started kneeling to protest social injustice in a preseason game on this day in 2016. Prior to that, he had sat on the bench; after a talk with a veteran, he decided to kneel from then on.

On this day in 1975, General Daniel ‘Chappie’ James, Jr., became the first Black person to be promoted to the rank of a four-star general. He was named Commander-in-chief of the North American Air Defense Command.
