Jimmy Lee Jackson, from Marion, Alabama, was murdered by an Alabama State Trooper during a peaceful march for voting rights on this day in 1965.
Wallace Fard Muhammad, also known as Wallace D. Fard, was a traveling salesman who was able to gain a following preaching Islam and a form of African self-pride. This gained traction in the era of Jim Crow across the United States. The organization he helped found, the Nation of Islam, celebrates this day in 1877 as his birthday.
On this day in 1869, The United States Congress passed The Fifteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which prohibited states and the federal government from denying a citizen the right to vote. It, however, only applied to males. It was duly ratified on March 30, 1870.
