Henry Highland Garnet was an abolitionist, minister, educator, and speaker who escaped slavery and became a fierce proponent of militant abolitionism. His radicalism led him not only to advocate a ‘back to Africa’ tendency, but to emigrate himself. He died in Liberia on this day in 1882.
