Garrett Morgan, the great inventor and entrepreneur, died on this day in 1963 in Cleveland, Ohio. Morgan’s most notable invention is the three-position traffic light system.


Fort Negro was an independent settlement of Blacks and Native peoples in what is now Florida that attracted many slaves from other southern states. This was a threat to the slave system; on this day in 1816, the U.S. Army and Navy launched an attack on the settlement that killed most of the residents.
