On this day in 1846, Rebecca J. Cole was born in Philadelphia. PA. She was the second woman to qualify as a physician in the United States in 1867. As a woman, a doctor, organization founder and an activist for social reform, she faced obstacles on account of race and gender. She practiced medicine for 50 years!








 





Freedom’s Journal was the first newspaper set up, owned, and operated by Black people in the United States. Edited by Samuel Cornish and John Russwurm, the maiden issue came out on this day in 1827; it was published out of New York City.





 












Aware of what was going on in other southern cities, the City of San Antonio negotiated opening lunch counters to all in stores starting on this day in 1960.
