Akwasi Osei

David Dinkins was born on this day in 1927. He became the first African American mayor of New York City, serving from 1989-1993.


 





Arthur Robert Ashe, Jr, was born on this day in Richmond, Virginia. He was the first African American male to win the prestigious Wimbledon Tennis championship.





 

In 1893, Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, an African American, becomes the first surgeon in the US to perform open-heart surgery at Provident Hospital in Chicago. He had established the hospital to cater mostly for Blacks. Provident also trained nurses.







Mary McLeod Bethune, educator and civil rights leader, was born in Mayesville, South Carolina on this day in 1875.
