Akwasi Osei

Yvonne Brathwaite Burke, lawyer and politician, on this day in 1966 became the first Black woman elected to the California Assembly. In 1972, she becomes the first woman from California to be elected to Congress. After her stint in Congress, she was elected as the first Black Woman Chair of the Los Angeles County Supervisors in 1993. She



 

Monroe Baker was a self-made, well-to-do businessman when on this day in 1867 he was named mayor of St. Martinville, Louisiana. He was probably the first Black mayor of a town in the United States.
