Akwasi Osei

On this day in 1888, Capital Savings Bank in Washington, DC became the first bank organized and operated by African Americans.



 


On this day in 1956, Mae Jemison was born in Alabama. She eventually became a physician and the first African American woman to travel in space.



 

Ku Klux Klan activity began after the Civil War. On this day in 1871, Klan activity became so widespread that President Grant suspended the writ of habeas corpus and declared martial law in some counties in South Carolina.








 

Historian Lerone Bennett, Jr. was born on this day in 1928.




Jupiter Hammon, perhaps the first Black poet published in the United States, was born into slavery on this day in 1711.
