Former President of Tanzania Mwalimu Julius Nyerere passed away on this day in 1999. He was 77. Nyerere was lauded as one of the greatest statesmen of his time.
Big Paul Robeson always made news. On this day in 1916, he was not fielded by his Rutgers University football team when the opponent, Washington and Lee University, refused to play against a team with a Black person. This slight did not prevent Paul Robeson from being named an All American that year.
