Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu was born on this day in 1933 in Zungeru, Nigeria. He rose to become a military officer in the Nigerian Army, and later led the secession of Biafra from the Federal Government that led to the Civil War from 1970-1973.



 

History was made on this day in 2008 when the Democratic Party nominee for president, Barack Hussein Obama won the election. He defeated Arizona Senator John McCain, the Republican candidate, to become the first African American to be elected President. 250,000 people gathered at Grant Park to hear his victory speech.



 

On this day in 1750, Jean-Baptiste Point Du Sable is reported to have been born in Haiti. He later became the first prominent settler in what eventually became the city of Chicago.



 



On this day in 1988, William ‘Bill’ and Camille Cosby donated $20 million to Spelman College in Atlanta, GA. It was the largest gift in school history. Spelman has since discontinued a professorship in his name.
