Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin, born Hubert Gerold Brown, also known as H. Rap Brown, replaced Stokeley Carmichael (Kwame Touré) as the Chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) on this day 1967.
The Poor Peoples Campaign in 1968 was the last major project of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Its intention was to raise the temperature of non-violence to a higher level, ‘…pressuring Congress into passing an economic Bill of Rights. Now under Reverend Ralph Abernathy, the campaign got going starting on this day in 1968.
On this day in 1862, Robert Smalls, a Black man working on a Confederate ship CSS Planter as a naval pilot, was able to steer the ship into Union lines after the white officers had gone ashore for the night.
