On this day in 1966 was born the first day of the African American holiday season named as Kwanzaa. It was created by Dr. Maulana Karenga to regenerate African cultural values among Black people in the United States and in the diaspora. There are seven days which celebrate seven principles inherent in African culture. The first day celebrates Umoja, meaning Unity.
