Akwasi Osei

Jean-Michel Basquiat was born on this day in 1960 in New York City. He was an American artist who created at the confluence of street art, graffiti art, and hip-hop music culture. He died young, in 1988 at the age of 27. This increased the value of his works: one piece commanded $110 million in 2017.



 




Professor William Edward Burghardt Dubois became the first Black to be elected on this day in 1943 to the National Institute of Arts and Letters
