One of America’s accomplished actors, Samuel L. Jackson, was born on this day in 1941 in Washington, DC.



 




South Carolina on this day in 1865 issues the first of the restrictive laws against Black people that came to be known as the Black Codes.






 

After the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a lower court’s decision that the law requiring segregation on Montgomery buses was unconstitutional, the Montgomery Improvement Association on this day voted to end their year-long boycott of city buses.



 


Berry Gordy, musician, record executive, producer, songwriter, film producer and director, established the Motown Record label on this day in 1959. Its first hit was “Bad Girl” by the Miracles, featuring Smokey Robinson.
