Akwasi Osei

George Thomas ‘Mickey’ Leland, Congressman from Texas died in a plane crash in Ethiopia in 1989. He and others were on a mission to provide aid to people experiencing a famine in East Africa.


 

Ralph J. Bunche, the first Black person to win the Nobel Peace Prize, was born on this day in 1904.











 


Abebe Bikila of Ethiopia was born on this day in 1932; he won the marathon race at the 1960 Olympics running in bare feet.






 

Alice Coachman became the first Black woman to win an Olympic gold medal in the high jump at the 1948 games in London.
