On this day in 1800, a fierce storm blocked the start of Gabriel Prosser’s slave rebellion in Richmond, VA. It was reported to be one of the biggest and better planned rebellions which was still betrayed by some of the plotters after the downpour.


 

The Second Morrill Act was passed on this day in 1890. It created public agricultural and mechanic arts institutions to serve Black people across some southern states.



 






Lt. Colonel Guion Bluford, Jr. became the first Black astronaut to go into space on this day in 1983.







 




Constance Baker Motley was confirmed on this day in 1966 as a U.S District Judge, becoming the first Black woman on the federal bench.
