Akwasi Osei

Gwendolyn (Gwen) Elizabeth Brooks, poet, author, and teacher was a chronicler of Black life. Her collection, Annie Allen, won her the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry in 1950, making her the first Black person to be so honored. She was born on this day in 1917 in Topeka, Kansas.



 




Prince Rogers Nelson, Prince to the world, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, actor, and director, is regarded as a genius. He was born on this day in 1958 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
















Yolande Cornelia Giovanni, popularly known as Nikki Giovanni, author, writer, poet, activist, and educator, was born on this day in 1943 in Knoxville, Tennessee. She was one of the leading lights of the Black Arts Movement that was radical, self-

defining, and self-affirming.
