On this day in 1964, Malcolm X founded the Organization of African American Unity (OAAU) to advance the course of Black self-empowerment and self-reliance in the United States. It was built on the model of the Organization of African Unity established the year before by African nations.



On this day in 1971, the United States Supreme Court set aside the conviction of Muhammad Ali for draft evasion three years earlier. Ali went on to reclaim his heavyweight championship of the world.
