The Soweto Uprising began on this day in 1976 when schoolchildren refused to accept Afrikaans, rather than English, as the medium of instruction in schools. The uprising started in Soweto and spread across the country. The first recorded death was 13-year old Hector Pieterson, and young people across the country led the revolt. The story told in the Broadway play (later a film) SARAFINA.

Abraham Lincoln delivered the House Divided Speech on this day in 1858 in Springfield, Illinois. Its anti-slavery theme served him well as he was able to earn the nomination of the Republican Party two years later as its Presidential candidate.
