Benjamin Banneker

Benjamin Banneker was born free in Ellicott City, MD on this day in 1731. He was an accomplished scientist, author, surveyor, inventor, and builder. One of his note-worthy accomplishments was that, after Pierre L’Enfant was dismissed as the principal planner of the project, Banneker became a part of the new planners, builders, and surveyors who built Washington, DC.

Freedmen’s Hospital
On this day in 1868, Freedmen’s Hospital (now Howard University Hospital) in Washington, DC became the teaching hospital of the Howard University Medical School. The Freedmen’s Hospital had been established in 1862 to care for freed Blacks during the Civil War.
