Absalom Jones
Absalom Jones is considered one of the major church leaders in early America. On this day in 1746, he was born in slavery in Delaware, was manumitted after his move to Philadelphia, and with Richard Allen organized the Free African Society. Jones became the leader of one strand of the ‘African Church’ called The African Episcopal Church. The other was the African Methodist Episcopal Church headed by Richard Allen.

On this day in 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected as the Republican President of the United States. The Republican Party had promised not to interfere in slavery in the southern states; however, it opposed the expansion and extension of slavery into the West. His election led to 11 southern states seceding from the union.
Oscar Stanton De Priest was elected on this day in 1928 to serve in the U. S House of Representatives. He was the first black to serve in the Twentieth Century.
