16th Street Baptist Church
It took many years, but Robert Edward Chambliss was finally convicted of first-degree murder on this day in 1977. Also known as ‘Dynamite Bob’, he had been a member of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) and was a part of the group that bombed the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1963 that killed four teenage girls.

Jonestown tragedy
On this day in 1978, the Jonestown tragedy/mass suicide/massacre took place in Guyana, South America. Over 900 followers of the leader of the Peoples Temple Reverend Jim Jones died by drinking cool aid laced with cyanide under the direction of their leader Jim Jones.
