Granville T. Woods
Granville T. Woods is known as one of America’s great inventors. On this day in 1891, Woods received a patent to one of the many inventions that make up railway telegraphy, the methods that allowed trains to communicate with each other.

Nat Turner’s Revolt in 1831 was one of the most important acts of resistance during the enslaved period. On this day in 1831, the captured Turner reportedly gave a confession to a lawyer Thomas Ruffin Gray, who published it as The Confessions of Nat Turner. Turner was hanged on November 11, 1831, in Jerusalem, Virginia.
On this day in 1780, the African Union Society of Newport, Rhode Island was organized. It was the first Black Mutual Aid Society formed in the United States of America.
By winning the PGA of America’s Long Beach Open championship on this day in 1957, Charlie Sifford became the first Black to win a major golf tournament. However, he was not allowed to play in the PGA’s next tournament; he became a full member of the PGA three years after this win.
